Two damaged men.
One dangerous mission.
One healing love.
These are the men of Hard Ink.
Hard Ink Tattoo owner Jeremy Rixey has taken on his brother's stateside fight against the enemies that nearly killed Nick and his Special Forces team a year ago. Now Jeremy's whole world has been turned upside down by the chaos - and by a brilliant, quiet blond man who tempts him to settle down for the first time ever.
Recent kidnapping victim Charlie Merritt has always been better with computers than with people, so when he's drawn into the SF team's investigation of his army colonel father's corruption, he's surprised to find acceptance and friendship - especially since his father never accepted who he was. Even more surprising is the heated tension he feels with sexy, tattooed Jeremy, Charlie's opposite in almost every way.
With tragedy and chaos all around them, temptation flashes hot, and Jeremy and Charlie can't help but wonder why they're trying so hard to be good.

First off, BRAVO, Laura Kaye! And thumbs up to the powers-that-be at Avon publishing that gave her the go-ahead to publish an M/M novella in the midst of a M/F military suspense series. From book 1, I knew Jeremy needed his own story. He IS charisma. Fun, smart, sarcastic, sexy, artistic and possessing a heart that's wide open. If I were in this warehouse with these guys, I would gravitate toward Jeremy. Getting little glimpses of Jeremy is more than half of the reason I've read each book in the series. I need to know what shirt he's wearing, I need to see if there's anymore longing glances shared with Charlie... I need to see him jump into the dangerous fray with the rest of the soldiers even though he's not part of Nick's unit of men. I just love Jeremy.
But guess what. Charlie stole this show, baby! Charlie has been on the fringes of this series as a character we just can't really know because he's shy--prone to blushes and introspection---we haven't been in his head AT ALL until now. And I'm so glad we are.
Charlie breaks my heart with his love for Jeremy and his desire to overcome his fears. His vulnerability was something that twisted my heart all up. But there's no need to worry about Charlie's vulnerability when Jeremy's around. He's the last person to treat anybody in a careless way, least of all Charlie. And these two come together so easily and in such a sweet and HOT (so very hot) way.
For those of you out there who choose not to read this novella because M/M isn't your thing, the good news is that not much of the overall storyline was progressed here. So, it's not completely necessary to read this installment, but I can't imagine why anyone would want to miss out on being in the heads of Jeremy and Charlie. I LOVE these guys and their lovemaking is so smokin' hot--this is most definitely THE HOTTEST of this series.

Hard to Be Good A Hard Ink Novella (Audible Audio Edition) Laura Kaye Jack Dupont HarperAudio Books Reviews
FINAL DECISION I found this novella disappointing. There is too much going on and too much background that needs to be covered here. Jeremy and Charlie have the possibility to have a great romance, but this novella doesn't do them justice.
THE STORY Jeremy Rixey was dragged into his brother NIck's fight to clear his name and those of the surviving members of his special force's team when NIck made Jeremy's business the home base for his investigation. The owner of Hard Ink, Jeremy is irreverent, fun and likes to have a good time. Bisexual, Jeremy is open about his sexuality and has no shame. Charlie Merritt is shy, considers himself a computer nerd and has been shamed by his homosexuality. His father was not accepting of him and that has made Charlie unsure but he knows that he is attracted to Jeremy. Charlie doubts, however, if the fun loving Jeremy could be interested in him as well.
OPINION I wanted this one to be better. Charlie and Jeremy have had chemistry throughout the series, but this novella shortchanged them. I didn't really get the sense of chemistry between them that had been present in the series and if I had not read the other books in the series, I don't think I would have gotten a sense of who these two men were at all. The complexity of the issues in this novella needed a longer treatment in order to properly deal with them. The short novella left the story feeling unfinished and rushed.
WORTH MENTIONING This novella focuses on the relationship between Jeremy and Charlie and doesn't spend any real time on the ongoing story which suits these outsiders.
CONNECTED BOOKS HARD TO BE GOOD is book 3.5 in the Hard Ink series. This novella heavily relies on readers knowing the characters from the other boosk in the series.
STAR RATING I give this book 2 stars.
Laura Kaye is back with the next installment in her Hard Ink Series. Overall, this book does not move the story forward but allows everyone to stop, take a deep breath, and prepare for the upcoming fight. Up to now we have come to love all the heroes and heroines each who have their own strengths and weaknesses. This book focuses on Jeremy (Nick's civilian brother) and Charlie (Becca's brother).
This story is so sweet and calming to these characters who have had so much happen to them and have been tested in ways very few civilian people have. To me this was a true love story. While it is a novella and short it is the culmination of the past four books that have been building up and giving us small glimpses (if you really pay attention this paring does not come as a surprise) into the minds of Charlie and Jer. Charlie speaks to me a great deal because of his fear and his self confidence issues.
One thing I love about Laura Kaye is she doesn't shy away from hard topics which she again proves with this book. The writing is clear, well researched, and hot. Her pace leaves you breathless in general and then she adds books like this to catch up. That are both hot and sweet. That allows us to see deeply into the characters and what makes then tick and what makes them "human". Do not let the fact that this is a M/M book dissuade you from reading this very enjoyable book. You may not miss anything large in the series but you will miss something in character development.
